In 2019 Milena was busking in Salamanca with her two year old daughter with a little boom box and traditional Cumbia costumes that she brought from Colombia. Dancing with her daughter was such a joyful and meanginful experience that she was inspired to do something more. Salsita kids is a made of parents and their kids dancing together in Colombian folklore style, combining the traditional and the modern, the theatrical and the practical. In the medium of dance and drama Salsita kids tells meaningful stories about our ancestors and our land.

MISSION

 The mission of Salsita kids is first and foremost to empower our children. To move freely and confidently is a wonderful thing. The other aspect is to connect children with their parents in a way like no other. When you’re doing something with your family beyond the everyday, beyond the ordinary that is when you can make these really strong connections. Lastly it’s about incorporating the wise traditions of our ancestors – the sharing, the group learning, the passing down of skills and knowledge and the way we should treat mother nature, like ourselves…with respect.

ABOUT MILENA

Milena Suarez is an actress, dancer and entrepreneur. Upon arriving to Australia in 2018 she set up Salsita, a Cali Salsa dance studio for adult beginners where she captured the hearts of all her students with her warm and humorous style of teaching.

Inspired by her early busking in Salamanca with her daughter Sophia, Milena created Salsita kids as a powerful opportunity for parents and children to connect in a meaningful way beyond the ordinary and the routine

She is also an accomplished actress having acted in film, television and the stage in Bogota Colombia and upon moving to Tasmania has acted in many one act play festivals around Tasmania, winning best actress in Hobart, two years running.
